DHL expands its MMEX solution providing options from China to the US and Latin America

DHL Supply Chain has announced the beginning of construction of its 'London Thames Gateway’, which will be operational in spring 2023.

DHL Global Forwarding has expanded its solution’s, Multi-Modal Express (MMEX), scope, aiming to offer routing options from China to destinations in the US and Latin America with reduced transit time and cost savings. The service was initially launched in 2019 to connect China to Latin America and is now seeking to additionally connect China to the US.

An innovative end-to-end service, MMEX aims to integrate air transportation, inland solutions and ocean shipping into the US and Latin America to increase the speed and efficiency of the shipping operations. The MMEX is reportedly delivering cargo door-to-door from any location in China, via Shanghai Port, to any destination in the US and Latin America, via Long Beach Port, within 12 to 17 days. The company has said that customers were reporting savings of around 30-35% in their airfreight cost, many of which are in the high-tech, automotive and retail sectors.

Additionally, amid concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, DHL Global Forwarding is extending the MMEX service as a contingency plan to support urgent shipments for customers from China to Europe also via Long Beach Port and then flying to final destination in Europe.

“At DHL Global Forwarding, we are always looking to increase our operational efficiency and to offer our customers the best-possible solutions – especially during these challenging times,” said David Goldberg, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding US. “This new service not only reduces transit times for our customers, but highlights how we are continually adapting to meet their needs.”

The service was created to serve an increasingly globalised market with lower freight cost and total real-time, door-to-door monitoring. The MMEX service is also part of the company’s focus on sustainability.

“Innovative services like these continue to push our sustainability goals and give us a competitive advantage in the logistics market,” said Goldberg. “This exclusive one-of-a-kind solution presents itself as a sustainable alternative with CO2 reductions ranging from 50 to 80 percent in comparison to just using airfreight, depending on the distance.”

For 2020, DHL Global Forwarding seeks to service customers in Southeast Asia by expanding the scope of the MMEX service to Vietnam.
