DHL adds $1.6m facility to Life Sciences & Healthcare network in the US

DHL Supply Chain has announced the beginning of construction of its 'London Thames Gateway’, which will be operational in spring 2023.

DHL Global Forwarding has announced its new $1.6m facility in Indianapolis, Indiana. The building has 20,000 sq ft of dedicated perishable handling warehouse space. It is located to service the Midwest, Northeast, South and Southeast regions of the US and includes a bonded warehouse and constitutes part of the DHL Global Forwarding Free Trade Zone footprint.

The building is a bonded Container Freight Station (CFS), a location designated by carriers to receive cargo to be loaded into containers. The building contains three temperature controlled chambers; 15-25°C storage and handling, 2-8°C storage and handling, as well as -20°C storage and handling that together measure close to 20,000 sq ft, built with variable temperature capabilities to process any pharmaceutical, biotech or medical devices that require a temperature-controlled environment. The new facility in Indianapolis will be added to the list of established Certified Life Sciences Stations to support DHL’s THERMONET solution for temperature controlled air freight transportation. After completing the certification, the new facility will become one of eight Certified Life Sciences Stations in the US completed thus far, with specific storage capabilities dedicated for life science and healthcare goods. THERMONET provides enhanced monitoring and visibility for life science and healthcare products using solutions such as the “Life Track” IT platform and in-transit temperature data and monitoring.

In addition to the new facility, DHL Global Forwarding is planning a new Life Sciences and Healthcare Freighter service from EMEA and Indianapolis. The new freighter tailors an “End-to-End” service from the time a shipment is accepted at the customer’s warehouse to the destination hub with inland-haulage to the Indianapolis facility for storage and final distribution. The new freighter aims to provide a scalable solution to ensure perishable shipments are handled accordingly and delivered with fast transit times.

The facility/certifications will also include Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), ISO 9001, and ISO 22301 (BCM). The building is a GDP compliant handling and facility operations and all staff are Dangerous Goods Certified Personnel.
