Yusen Logistics and artificial intelligence consulting business Cinnamon AI announced that they have signed a basic agreement to use AI for improving logistics operations. The aim is to develop a case mark matching system for air export by utilizing the AI-Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Flax Scanner developed by Cinnamon AI. A case mark is a symbol, number, or letter that identifies the cargo that should be shipped.

Yusen Logistics and Cinnamon AI have verified the applicability of AI-OCR by carrying out experiments at the time of outgoing export shipments; when export cargo is on the way out from a warehouse, Yusen Logistics checks the cargo information received from the customer and the case mark to identify it. The AI-OCR enables automatic reading of target items without pre-registration by learning the characteristics of each item.

The aim is to reduce the number of visual checking tasks and prevent misidentification by reading and checking case marks using Flax Scanner, as well as improve efficiencies by reviewing the workflow from collation to attachment of cargo labels.

Yusen said that it first will introduce the system at its Narita Logistics Center as well as to other domestic and overseas warehouses, and to the wider logistics industry afterwards.
