La Poste opens new parcel sorting hub

La Poste has opened a new parcel sorting hub in Ile-de-France. The new facility in Seine-et-Marne is the fifth and largest of La Poste’s “new generation” parcel sorting hubs. It comes following the creation of hubs in Isère, Pas-de-Calais, Var and Val-d’Oise.

The new hub is the result of an investment plan started in 2016, aimed at adapting industrial facilities. It opened at the end of April 2021 and is now the largest parcel processing hub in France both in surface area and processing capacity. La Poste stated it has on average three times the processing capacity of the previous generation of hubs, with the ability to process more than 37,000 parcels per hour. The hub has a surface area of 23,000 sq m.

The company has invested €41.2m to create the new hub in Ile-de-France Sud. La Poste has invested €450m over the past four years to adapt its industrial and logistics facilities to the growth in e-commerce. e-commerce now accounts for 13.4% of France’s retail trade compared to 9.8% in 2019, with 17,400 new internet retailers created last year. In the first quarter of 2021, there was a 50% increase in parcel volumes with 2m parcels sent every day in France.

This new hub is the first of Colissimo’s ultra-modern hubs to be equipped with “by-pass” technology, which increases sorting capacity.  This is a conveyor system that allows the parcel to take a shorter route on the sorter, which allows it to remain on the sorter for less time and thus free up the tray for the next parcel more efficiently.

The new hub will take over part of the activity of the Colissimo hub in Moissy, located in the same department. The latter will be transformed into a mixed platform including a parcel delivery activity.  The switchover will take place gradually from April 2021 to June 2021.
