Genesse & Wyoming (G&W) has announced that its subsidiary Freightliner Heavy Haul Ltd has signed a long-term, bulk rail-haulage contract with Mendip Rail Ltd. Mendip Rail is a joint venture between Hanson Aggregates and Aggregate Industries (AI), two large aggregate producers in the UK.

Freightliner will haul eight million tonnes of aggregate per year, as part of the contract, which is set to start in November 2019. This equates to 107,000 carloads annually, which will travel from quarries owned by Hanson and AI in the Mendips, North Somerset, to terminals in London and the South East. In addition, Freightliner will purchase eight locomotives from Mendip Rail by the end of the year.

Freightliner Chief Executive Officer, Gary Long, commented on the new contract: “By adding one of the largest bulk haulage contracts in the UK, we are also adding to the foundation of our long-term bulk business as we have successfully replaced traffic losses caused by the collapse of the UK coal industry in 2015.”
