GLS expands emission-free delivery in Leipzig

GLS emission-free Leipzig

GLS has received 10 brand new eSprinters from Mercedes-Benz which add to a fleet of 11 eBikes and two eVans, with e-deliveries now accounting for two-thirds of GLS last mile shipments in the Leipzig city area.

The replacement of conventionally powered vans for eSprinters comes in the wake of the city of Leipzig declaring a climate emergency in October 2019.

At the Leipzig micro-hub, around 4,500 parcels are processed every day for delivery in the greater Leipzig area. Currently, an average of 24 vans and 11 cargo bikes are used for the deliveries. The eSprinters have replaced half of the conventionally powered van fleet and have thus halved van emissions.

“Our goal is to also use electric vehicles for the remaining deliveries by the end of our financial year next spring” said Marc Baumgarte, East Region Manager at GLS Germany.
