DPD Germany acquires 150 eSprinters from Mercedes-Benz Vans

GeoPost acquires Aramex

The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is a vehicle for emissions-free last-mile delivery. Following the successful deployment of the first vehicles as part of the ZUKUNFT.DE pilot project in Hamburg, logistics service provider DPD Germany has now added another 150 eSprinters to its fleet. This is a further step towards e-mobility and sustainability in the Courier, Express, and Parcels (CEP) sector, which is of growing importance especially for local emissions-free transport in conurbations.

The battery-powered electric Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is free from exhaust and noise emissions, making it suited to commercial use in the inner city. In these areas short, plannable delivery tours with many stops predominate. The eSprinter proportion of parcels for private consignees is particularly high. The batteries of the eSprinter are usually charged directly at the depots. The tours are planned in such a way that additional charging is not necessary in the course of the delivery process. “Green electricity” further improves the carbon footprint of the e-vans: since the beginning of 2020 DPD has exclusively procured green electricity from renewable sources throughout Germany. The vehicles will be used at the depot locations in Hamburg, Essen and Nuremberg.

In the model supplied to DPD Germany the eSprinter panel van, which in a high-roof version has a permissible gross weight of 3,500kg, features a battery capacity of 47kWh with a range of 128-158km and a maximum payload of 849kg. Flexibility is provided by the integrated quick-charge function, thanks to which the battery can be recharged from 10% to 80% within approximately 25 minutes. The cargo volume of 11m3 can be used without restriction, as the batteries are installed in the underbody. The electric drive powers the front wheels and produces 85kW with a torque of up to 295Nm.
