DHL Express has invested around €31m in a new station in Berlin Tempelhof as part of its extensive Germany-wide infrastructure programme. The new building has recently started operations and, with new sorting systems, is contributing to further growth in shipment volumes and, through the use of environmentally friendly technologies, also to the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s new sustainability goals. In order to respond to the increasing demand for national and international express shipments, operating and administrative areas totalling 7,000 sq m are now available at the new location. In addition, the company relies on CO2 as much as possible-free delivery on the streets of Berlin and will also supply its customers there with 61 fully electric vehicles in the future.

“We are firmly convinced that logistics and sustainability have to go hand in hand,” said, Markus Reckling, Managing Director in Germany at DHL Express. “This is more true than ever since the changed purchasing behaviour of consumers and companies due to the Covid-19 pandemic is leading to continued growth in shipment volumes. Thanks to our investments in state-of-the-art technology and fully electric delivery vehicles, we are ideally equipped for this growth better with the world and, above all, more environmentally friendly.”

The new Berlin station is equipped with a new sorting system with an integrated measuring and weighing system that can process 6,000 packages per hour for shipping to over 220 countries and territories worldwide. In addition, the new building has four so-called PUD fingers (“Pick-up and Delivery”) for direct loading and unloading of the delivery vehicles. The loading process of the vehicles has been made easier for the couriers, as the express shipments are automatically transported via the sorting system to the corresponding gate, where they can load the couriers directly into their vehicle in a back-friendly manner. The electric vans used are eSprinters from Mercedes-Benz,

When planning the building, emphasis was placed on the use of energy-saving materials, for example, the most modern LED technology is used for the entire lighting of the building. The DHL Express Station meets all security requirements of the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA). This is why this company’s location will also receive the globally recognized TAPA Class A certification as the highest level of security in air transport.

The Deutsche Post DHL Group in Berlin is now using a total of 290 fully electric vehicles (StreetScooter and eSprinter) as well as over 2,000 bicycles, e-bikes and e-trikes, thus saving around 1,000 tonnes of CO2 per year alone the federal capital.
