In June 2020, the Chinese authorities released a plan for the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP), with the goal of building it into a globally influential high-level free trade port by the middle of the century. Despite Hainan FTP being on track to become the largest duty-free and travel retail market in the world, there are several challenges that come with the fast-growing business there.
A major challenge would be the supply chain being unable to cope with the huge surge in demand. Furthermore, in recent months China has struggled with the impact of its continued Covid-related lockdowns.
