Aramex commits to the Science Based Targets initiative

Aramex has announced it has signed a commitment with the Science Based Targets initiative to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The company hopes that by setting the target, it will accelerate its climate action goals and help keep a global temperature rise below 2°C, in line with the Paris Agreement.

This initiative comes as part of Aramex’s sustainability strategy to reduce its impact on the environment, prevent climate-related risks, drive down energy consumption, and ensure that the company’s progress towards net zero carbon is aligned with climate science. Aramex is one of the few companies in the Middle East to have signed the commitment.

The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between the CDP, United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and the Worldwide Fund for Nature. The initiative looks to define and promote best practices in science-based target setting and independently assess companies’ targets.

The company stated it had been taking proactive measures to reduce carbon emissions for over a decade. In 2020, the company reported it had surpassed its 2016 goal of reducing emissions per shipment by 20%. Chief Sustainability Officer Raji Hattar commented: “Beyond reducing our carbon emissions, we also want to create a positive impact by empowering our peers, suppliers and other stakeholders to follow and take on an active role in protecting the environment”.
