Amazon has announced that it plans to open a 1m sq ft fulfilment centre in Channahon, Illinois. It is expected that the facility will create more than 500 new full-time jobs in addition to the existing 11,000 staff currently employed across the state.

Employees at the new fulfilment centre will pick, pack and ship large customer items, such as sports equipment, patio furniture, fishing rods, pet food, kayaks, bicycles, and larger household goods.

“Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than $4bn in the state through its local fulfilment centre, cloud infrastructure and research facilities. Illinois is a great place to do business and we are excited to continue our growth and investment in the state with our new fulfilments centre,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s Vice President of Global Customer Fulfilment.

Governor JB Pritzker said: “Illinois is the transportation hub of the Midwest, and we welcome this new fulfilment centre and the economic growth it will create.”

“Amazon’s investment in this new Channahon facility marks continued success in local economic development,” said Channahon Mayor Missey Moorman Schumacher.

Amazon claims that its network supports businesses of all sizes worldwide through the “Fulfilment By Amazon” offering, many of which are based in Illinois. According to Amazon, there are more than 73,000 authors, small and medium-sized businesses, and developers in Illinois growing their companies and reaching new customers on Amazon products and services.
