Air Freight, engine and fuel efficiency

air cargo plane, freight forwarding post-covid market growth

At first glance, replacing the use of hydrocarbons in air transportation appears almost impossible. Aircraft require energy dense fuel sources that support high power-to-weight propulsion technology, much higher than that of land or sea transport. Battery technology is a very difficult alternative and, given the efficiency and engineering elegance of jet engines, other alternatives such as internal combustion engines are also an unlikely solution.

Yet, surprisingly, the prospect of controlling the output of greenhouse gas emissions for the air freight market seems quite good for two reasons:

• Jet engines still have the potential for improved fuel efficiency.
• Fuel for jet engines can be synthesised in a manner that uses recycled or organic carbon-dioxide.

Our latest whitepaper examines the realistic alternative fuel options available for the air freight industry, and the potential the industry already has to become more carbon neutral.
