Hermes to replace barcode scanners with Scandit smartphone app

Hermes UK is implementing mobile barcode scanning and Augmented Reality (AR) technology from Scandit for verification and proof of delivery. The initiative is part of Hermes digital transformation project to offer more personalised services to its customers.

Over the next three years Hermes is planning to replace more than 15,000 barcode scanners with smartphones loaded with a Scandit-powered Android app. Just by using a smartphone, couriers will be able to scan items, record an electronic signature, verify an ID and take a picture of where a package has been left.

During the migration period, Hermes couriers will begin using additional Scandit software features, MatrixScan and AR overlays. This means couriers will scan multiple barcodes at once to search for and find a specific item quickly and view parcel/customer information overlaid on the device screen. Hermes is currently implementing the use of MatrixScan-AR overlays for code identification.

“As part of our digital transformation strategy, we are planning to replace barcode scanners with smartphones that provide couriers with real time data,” said Chris Ashworth, Chief information officer from Hermes UK. “Enabling couriers to carry a smartphone helps us to improve operational efficiency and customer experience. Furthermore, couriers can now use their own phone instead of having to carry a barcode scanner.”
