Hermes expands its collaboration with ONOMOTION in Berlin

Hermes Germany and the Berlin cargo bike manufacturer ONOMOTION have expanded their collaboration. Over the next few weeks, a total of 18 new cargo bikes will be used in downtown Berlin for delivery. The aim is for the bikes to replace conventional vans and reduce emissions. The parcel service provider successfully tested the prototype of the Pedal Assisted Transporter (PAT) back in 2019. The new cargo bikes in the Hermes fleet are also the first vehicles delivered by ONO. Nine cargo bikes are already delivering shipments in the city of Berlin emission-free.

“The cooperation with ONOMOTION is an important component of our ‘Urban Blue’ mobility concept and therefore a clear component of our future strategy,” explains Hendrik Schneider, Chief Financial Officer at Hermes Germany.

Equipped with two electric motors, the deliverers can cover around 30km per battery charge. They are supported with pedal assistance of up to 25km per hour. The PAT is legally classified as a bicycle, but with a possible payload of more than 220kg, it is more based on a small van.

The cargo bikes will cover a tour length of 6km to 8 km each day and have around 100 consignments – including reloading – on board per bike.

The micro-depots in a central location for the distribution of shipments are an important aspect of inner-city delivery. In Berlin, Hermes delivers directly to end customers from three micro-depots. The shipments are sorted at night in the logistics centre in Ketzin, Brandenburg, and then delivered to the small distribution centres.
