DHL Industrial Projects awarded three-year contract from Madagascan mining enterprise

DHL Global Forwarding’s Industrial Projects division has won a three-year contract from Ambatovy, a Madagascan nickel and cobalt mining enterprise.

Ambatovy is a joint venture between Canada’s Sherritt International Corporation, Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and Korea Resources Corporation. At full capacity, the entity will produce 60,000 tonnes of refined nickel, 5,600 tonnes of refined cobalt and 210,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate fertilizer per year in Madagascar.

The agreement entails serving both on-shore and off-shore locations.

For the on-shore activities, DHL will handle import customs clearance for air freight shipments of mining spare parts into Madagascar, with delivery to the Ambatovy mine site from Antananarivo to Moramanga and to the plant at Toamasina through daily shuttle services.

For the off-shore activities, DHL will arrange international air and ocean imports into Madagascar of mining equipment, consolidated at key DHL hubs in the US (Houston), Canada (Montreal), Europe (Antwerp), Africa (Johannesburg) and China (Shanghai). Through DHL’s Material Management System, Ambatovy will have real time visibility of its shipments.
