Bolloré Logistics pilots plant-based fuel solution

Bolloré Logistics

Bolloré Logistics Luxembourg is offering its customers a truck that will run almost entirely on Total HVO100 fuel, made from 100% renewable plant-based materials. The truck will run from Luxembourg Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle three times a week as part of its pilot scheme which is being run in partnership with Arthur Welter Transports.

HVO100 is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and is produced from various bio-based raw materials, residues, and waste. It has the same chemical structure as a regular fuel and can be used flexibly, either as the sole fuel, in a blend, or alternating with other fuel in a diesel engine. It also meets the requirements of the most extreme after-treatment systems. The Total HVO100 product meets the EN15940 standard for XTL synthetic diesel and is compatible with most diesel engines.

TotalEnergies in Luxembourg recently installed TOTAL HVO100 pumps at its CRS service station in Bettembourg to provide its partners Arthur Welter Transport, Bolloré Logistics Luxembourg, and other users of the Bettembourg-Dudelange intermodal terminal and the Eurohub South logistics hub with a new refuelling facility. At the hub, the 100% renewable biofuel is available for heavy-duty vehicles and can be used as an alternative to diesel fuel without needing to convert the engine. TotalEnergies estimates that biofuels will represent around 15% of fuels sold by the brand in 2030 and 25% by 2050.

Arthur Welter Transports estimates that a trip in a traditional diesel-fuelled vehicle, with an average load weight, emits 340kg of CO2. The same trip in a vehicle using TOTAL HVO100 fuel would emit only 85kg of CO2, representing a saving of 255kg of CO2 per trip and an average of nearly 40 tonnes of CO2 per year for just one truck.

Marc Hansen, Manager of the Bolloré Logistics Luxembourg hub, said, “This new service we are launching with our partners Arthur Welter Transports and TotalEnergies in Luxembourg meets the requirements of our customers who are increasingly demanding greener logistics solutions. Other routes (Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and more) will soon be offered and will strengthen our service offer and improve our environmental performance.”

The project comes as part of Bolloré’s Powering Sustainable Logistics CSR programme, with one of its major aims reducing Bolloré’s transport services scope 3 CO2 emissions by 30% between now and 2030.
