IATA ranks FedEx Express as top airline by freight tonnes


The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced industry performance statistics for 2015. Globally, cargo markets showed a 2.3% expansion in freight and mail tonne kilometers (FTKs), outstripping a capacity increase of 5.8% decreasing freight load factor by 1.6% percentage points.

In addition, IATA ranked the top five airlines by total freight tonnes carried on scheduled services as follows:

  1. FedEx Express (7.1m)
  2. United Parcel Service (4.5m)
  3. Emirates Airline (2.5m)
  4. Cathay Pacific Airways (1.6m)
  5. Korean Air (1.5m)

Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO, stated, “Last year airlines safely carried 3.6bn passengers—the equivalent of 48% of the Earth’s population – and transported 52.2m tonnes of cargo worth around $6 trillion.”
