FM Logistic has announced the trial of a prototype drone system, for the purpose of conducting automated inventory-taking within its warehouses.

In partnership with two firms, software publisher Hardis Group and drone manufacturer Squadrone System, the company has agreed to test the system in its warehouse in Satolas, France from September until the end of 2016. Hardis Group plans to commence full production of the solution with Squadrone System in 2017.

The drone is equipped with an on-board camera, which identifies and captures inventory data that can be transmitted to the facility’s WMS. Within the Satolas warehouse, Hardis Group will test site mapping, geolocation, lighting configurations, surfaces encountered by the drone and other flight conditions, as well as the collection of information required for inventory-taking, such as label reading.
