Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded modest growth in cargo volumes in the first half of 2015. It reported that total cargo transported increased slightly by 0.6% to 2.1m tonnes. However in June, the last month of the period under review, cargo volume decreased by 3.5% to 349,000 tonnes.
The decline in cargo throughput for June was mainly attributed to a 5% year-on-year drop in transhipments and a 4% decrease in exports. In contrast imports registered 1% growth compared to the same month of 2014. HKIA also stated that traffic to and from South East Asia, China and Europe underperformed against other regions during the month. The company also stated that cargo traffic was suppressed by the Eurozone weak economy and a slowdown in Asia Pacific imports and exports.
In the first half of 2015 cargo throughput was affected by an overall drop in exports. However cargo throughput is expected to consolidate for the rest of the year.
