Union Pacific invests $23m in its rail network

Union Pacific Railroad has announced that it plans to invest $23m in its US network in the states of Illinois and Colorado. The investment will come in two parts. The first $12m will be spent to improve the rail line between Chicago and Franklin Grove, Illinois, it is to be completed by the end of 2014. The next $11m will be invested in the rail line between Sterling and Messex, Colorado.

The project in Illinois will replace nearly 39,000 concrete railroad ties and install 8,400 tons of rock ballast between Elburn and Franklin Grove. Crews will also replace more than 11 miles of rail and renew the surfaces at 20 road crossings between Chicago and Elburn.

The $11m project in Colorado will also be completed by the end of 2014. It will replace more than 18 miles of rail, install seven switches and renew the surfaces at 23 road crossings.
