COSCO signs MOU for intermodal services in Greece

COSCO announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Trainose, a state owned Greek rail company. The MOU stipulates that the two companies will form a cooperative partnership through which Trainose will support COSCO’s sea-rail intermodal services from Piraeus Port in Greece and assist in the construction of a southern channel to the Piraeus Container Terminal.

The partnership forms part of a wider plan to develop the Maritime Silk Road. COSCO states that in order to make this successful Piraeus Port needs more efficient and stable rail services connecting it to East and Central Europe.

Cosco claims that Trainose is the ideal partner as the unique rail service provider in Greece, operating about 300 routes for both passengers and cargo. Long term it is hoped that the MOU will facilitate the development of an efficient railway from Piraeus Container Terminal to Central Europe.
