Amazon announces financial results for the second quarter of 2017

Amazon reported total net sales of $37.96bn for the second quarter of 2017 (Q2), recording a year-on-year improvement of 24.84%. In a marked contrast, operating income declined by 51.13%. 

Amazon’s total operating expenses stood at 98% of net sales, versus 96% in Q2 2016. Split out by category, costs in Fulfillment (33%), Marketing (44%), Technology and content (43%) and General and Administrative (51%) all increased faster than the company’s top line over the same period.

Of the company’s three divisions, AWS was the most successful during Q2. The business produced total net sales of $4.1bn, having grown by 42.07% year-on-year, and raised operating income by 27.58% to $916m.

The North America division reported net sales of $22.37bn, after growth of %. Operating income contracted significantly, however, to $436m after a % decrease. The International division grew net sales 16.67% to $11.49bn, though the division posted a widened operating loss of -$724m.
